Shiree Yap had been a runner for years when she decided to take it to the next level and try trail running. The activity involves long hours spent running through the bush on uneven ground, and on one such adventure outside Canberra, she fell.
"We had to slide down this boulder that had snow on it and I slid down too fast, landing against the rock at the bottom, and I fractured and dislocated my ankle," Ms Yap said.
Her injury was so severe, she was unable to continue.
She and her two friends were forced to call for emergency assistance and spent hours in the freezing cold bush of Namadgi National Park, waiting for rescue.
The group waited 11 hours to be found by crews from the State Emergency Service and Police Rescue, and it was another five hours before they were air-lifted back to safety.
